2026-01-08T10:28:10+00:00

Elizabeth, Lady Kitson is the founder of the Federation of Army Wives. We were delighted to receive this from her – commenting on the value of Reading Force I would like to congratulate Reading Force for its excellence and achievement – it’s a wonderful concept. I have been an Army daughter and an Army wife, and I know how important communications are when families are separated by deployments and constant moves. In the war, my mother and I were thrilled whenever we got a letter from my father. We always wrote and told him everything we [...]

Like many military families, they balance life between postings, separations, and the everyday juggle of work and parenting. Here, she shares how Reading Force became a meaningful part of their family life. “Over [...]

Over his career, he served on both Type 42 and Type 45 Destroyers and left the service as a Chief Gunner. Since leaving the service, he has signed up to Reading Force after hearing about the charity from a Reading Force Ambassador.    A Sense of Belonging    [...]

Why memoir writing matters

2025-05-27T13:40:37+00:00

In this blog founder and director of Reading Force, Alison Baverstock, recalls her personal experience in young adulthood of just how powerful getting a family story down on paper can be… My grandmother would often regale us with the story of her parents. Her mother (my great-grandmother) had eloped, realising that her strict parents would never accept her choice of husband. My grandmother’s grandmother, was furious and never saw her daughter again. But there was a mysterious older man who turned up at her parents’ house at regular intervals. His presence was never explained [...]

Reading to children: the best part of the day or a chore?

2025-05-16T12:12:40+00:00

In this blog Alison talks about the decline in reading to children and highlights the magic that happens when parents and carers do read to children… Everyone knows it’s important to read to children, but somehow in recent years it has been slipping back, so that now fewer than half (41%) of pre-schoolers are read to every day (down from 64% in 2012). It’s the same pattern with 5-7s: just over a third are read to daily, down [...]
