Armistice Eve in Aldershot: A really special evening of commemoration and celebration

Join us in the beautiful Prince Consort's Library, Prince Albert's brainchild, for an unforgettable evening of poetry, prose, and music.
Valerie Singleton
Janet Ellis

This unique occasion in Aldershot will both mark and explore the meaning of Armistice Day. Valerie Singleton and Janet Ellis will read from a selection of poetry and prose curated by Professor Jane Potter, Chair of the Wilfred Owen Association and trustee of the Wilfred Owen Estate, and Professor Alison Baverstock, founder and director of Reading Force. There will be musical interludes and the opportunity to review a special exhibition of books and other material relevant to the readings.

The event is offered to you by the charity Reading Force, which connects military families (serving and veteran) through shared-reading, in the process boosting their confidence and wellbeing - and keeping everyone in touch. Reading Force began in Aldershot in 2011 and is thrilled to return to the Prince Consort's Library for this special event. A similar event hosted last November was hugely appreciated - and another opportunity to mark the armistice in this way was widely requested.

The Prince Consort's Library is an architectural gem, the inspiration of Prince Albert who wanted to encourage wider reading among the military. It was built and funded by the Prince but after his early death his widow, Queen Victoria, continued to support the library in his memory. This distinct venue will take you back in time; the ideal location to listen to our programme of readings and music.

There are just sixty tickets available (organisations that sponsor Reading Force receive two free tickets) so early booking is advised and we are asking for donations. While we have no wish to deter anyone from attending, we would like to suggest a contribution of at least £25 per person. The event aims to raise money to fund the charity's important work in reaching the military community. Janet Ellis is a patron of www.readingforce.org.uk
