Writing Competition Terms and Conditions

The writing competition is promoted by Reading Force, Registered Charity No. 1159890, registered address 10 Homersham Road, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey KT1 3PN.  

By entering the writing competition you are accepting these terms and conditions and agreeing to be bound by them.  

Participation in this competition is free and no purchase is necessary in order to participate.  

The competition is open to children and adults who have a connection to British Armed Forces, serving or veterans. Only one entry per person is permitted. 

Competition categories 

Entries can be made in one of five categories.  

  1. Up to age 7. Entries can be written by parents and carers  
  2. Ages 8-11  
  3. Ages 12-14  
  4. Ages 15-18   
  5. Wider families and friends of military children (e.g. parents/carers, grandparents, cousins, schoolfriends and former classmates).  

Format 

The competition theme is ‘My Forces life’.  

Entries to be no more than 500 words, but can be less. Contribution to be matched to age of entrant.  

Illustrations welcome but not necessary.

Any form of written entry relating to experience connected to the Forces, fiction or non-fiction, and could comprise a wide variety of different formats, for example, poetry or a news item, fantasy writing about a Forces parent, an imaginative story or a series of diary entries.  

Entry instructions  

To enter the competition you must send us the competition entry by email to info@readingforce.org.uk. The entry can be typewritten or a photograph of a written entry (text must be readable).

Closing date for entries is midnight Sunday 27th March 2022.  

Entries must include the competition entrant’s name, age of child, address and Forces connection. Adults do not need to give their age if they are entering the Wider Family category.

By entering the competition you are agreeing to have the entry published in a printed anthology if it is chosen as a winner. Permission will be requested to include the family name but this is not a condition of entry. We respect your confidentiality.

Reading Force will not be liable for entries not received or incomplete.

Plus one parent/carer per winner to attend a virtual session with staff from Hachette Children’s Group to discover how a publishing house works.

All winning entries will be printed in an anthology and winners will be entitled to two copies each. 

No cash or other alternative can be requested by the winner. 

Book and voucher prizes will be delivered within 28 days of the closing date.  

Judging 

External judges will be appointed.  

The judges’ decision will be final.  

Each winner will be contacted by e-mail by 15th April 2022. The names of winners will be available on written request to Reading Force. 

The decision of Reading Force is final on all matters relating to this competition and these terms and conditions. 

Your personal details will not be disclosed to any third parties. 

By entering the competition, entrants agree to be bound by the rules and by any other requirements set out in the competition. 

By submitting a photograph, the winner consents to it being published on the Reading Force Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and website. 

Employees of Reading Force and any immediate family members or co-habitants of such employees, are not eligible to enter the competition.
