  • “Why should settings organise and promote Reading Force?’” Open or Close

    Reading Force is a fun initiative with the emotional well-being of Service children at its heart. It depends on the schools, community groups, libraries, HIVEs, welfare offices and other organisations who work with Service children and families to encourage them to participate and to distribute the resources.

  • “How does it benefit children and families?” Open or Close

    Service families can experience stress due to frequent moves and separations. Service children can face many challenges: an absent parent, away on training or on deployment; distance from wider family; repeated disruption to their education; moving away from friends and having to start again in a new environment. Reading Force provides common ground for communication (the book chosen) , gets everyone in a family involved and brings them closer together.

  • “We don’t want to differentiate between Service and civilian children, so can everyone join in?” Open or Close

    We are funded to support Service families and Reading Force has been created for them. However, Service families are welcome to invite civilian friends to join their Reading Force group and activity, and this can be highly beneficial for all. In some organisations and communities the scheme has helped foster a better understanding of Service life between Service families and civilians.

  • “Is Reading Force only for families who are separated by deployment?" Open or Close

    Reading Force is for all Service families, at home or away. In families where a parent is away, doing Reading Force gives common ground to share and to talk about on the phone, in emails, and over Skype, and can help improve communication. For families who are together it can be great to turn the TV off and spend time sharing a book and talking about it. Most families, at home and away, have said the best thing about taking part was that they loved doing an activity together.

  • “What’s the best way for children and families to read the book?” Open or Close

    This is up to individual families and the important thing is to let them know they can read the book in any way that suits them. Young children can be read to. Older siblings can read to younger brothers and sisters. Family members can take turns to read chapters out loud to one another. They may all want to read the book alone then gather together when they’ve all finished it to talk about it. Older children can read to a parent over Skype, and a parent to a child or children. Some families use a combination of ways. Mention audio books can be used?

  • “What if the children/families we work with don’t know how to begin their scrapbook? Open or Close

    There are a few simple headings inside the scrapbook to get people started. Tell them about our Scrapbook Gallery where they can get ideas and inspiration from other families scrapbooks. Some schools and community groups have held fun scrapbook workshops.

  • “Are the scrapbooks for children to complete at school or home?” Open or Close

    The scrapbooks are for families to complete. Whilst we ask schools to hand out Reading Force scrapbooks and support and encourage children and families to participate, Reading Force is not a school project.
