Project Description
At Solent there are a range of Forces children whose parents can be deployed for up to a year at a time. Headteacher Laura Peterkin-Aldred runs an after-school club for Forces children which parents are also invited to join.
“Reading Force is one of the ways we support our Service families and help the children develop their sense of belonging in a Service community. They understand that they are not alone, and that there are other children in the school in a similar situation.”
Children can Skype their deployed parent during club time, and they often talk about Reading Force, the book their reading, and start filling in their scrapbooks which they then take home.
One Solent parent said: “The after school club and doing Reading Force made us feel a sense of belonging to the community.”
