Risedale Sports & Community College in Hipswell, Catterick Garrison has around 45% Forces pupils and a high level of pupil movement. Helen Porritt, Risedale’s Service Child Advocate, encourages the children and teens from Year 7 to Year 11 to do Reading Force and the positive impact on pupils has been noticeable in a variety of ways, including a boost to their literacy skills.
“They don’t like being labelled as Service children but they were being acknowledged with Reading Force and they liked this. They were touched that they got a free book. It started lots of discussion with friends and family.
Doing Reading Force increased their reading age. It improved their literacy skills and vocabulary. We’ve seen a real difference. When they write they are a lot more imaginative. Anything that encourages a child to read is excellent.”
